ARCHIVED - Incidence rate leaps to 4,358 active cases: Valencia Covid update January 28
ICU admissions in Alicante province and the rest of the region have risen slightly in the last 24 hours
A week that began with a pandemic all-time record number of weekend infections ends with another high as the Valencia region's 14-day cumulative incidence rate soars to 4,358 cases per 100,000 people.
The tightening of Omicron's hold on the region doesn't appear to be waning, although president of the Valencian Society of Preventative Medicine, Juan Francisco Navarro, insists everything indicates that this sixth wave of the pandemic has reached its peak.
His comments follow confirmation that the Covid passport will be maintained in the Valencia region until February 28 after the Superior Court of Justice approved its extension when the current deadline expires on January 31.
The move has not been welcomed by the Society, which is calling for additional restrictions to prevent the health system from becoming "even more overloaded", and the hospitality industry has blasted the Covid certificate as "useless", arguing the sector is being penalised.
Valencia President, Ximo Puig, remains convinced that no further restrictions are necessary at this point, despite the fact that active cases are still rising sharply in the Elche-Hospital General, Elche-Crevillente, Orihuela and Torrevieja health departments.
In contrast, the situation has improved slightly in the Elda, Alicante General Hospital and San Juan health departments.
Coronavirus cases
The regional Ministry of Health has reported 23,716 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, down from 30,410 on Thursday January 27. This brings the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,096,269.
By province: 3,104 have been recorded in Castellón (136,866 in total), 8,740 in Alicante (389,614) and 11,872 in Valencia (569,786). There are three unassigned cases.
According to the health data, there are currently 218,035 active cases, which represent 19.68% of the total positives.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 1,800 people admitted to hospital with Covid (four less than on Thursday), 195 of them in ICU (four more): 252 in the province of Castellón, 23 in ICU; 583 in the province of Alicante, 65 of them in ICU; and 965 in the province of Valencia, 107 in ICU.
21,640 people have overcome the virus since the last update, which means the total number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic now stands at 881,167
By provinces, the recoveries are distributed as follows: 104,906 in Castellón, 316,378 in Alicante and 459,826 in Valencia. There are 57 unassigned cases.
Fatalities
15 Covid-related deaths have been reported since Thursday's update (two more), which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in the Valencia region to 8,508: 969 in the province of Castellón, 3,267 in Alicante and 4,272 in Valencia.
The deceased, who died within the last seven days, are eight men, aged between 68 and 91, and seven women between 83 and 91-years-old.
Vaccination data
There's still no update on vaccinations. As of two weeks ago, on Friday January 14, 4,265,413 people had been double-jabbed, and a total of 10,042,110 doses of vaccine had been administered since the beginning of the pandemic.
