Husband remanded in prison for alleged murder of wife in Benalmádena
The man accused of killing his wife and setting their home on fire is facing multiple charges
A man has been placed in provisional imprisonment without bail after allegedly killing his wife and setting fire to their home in Benalmádena, Málaga. The Court of Violence against Women No. 3 in Málaga issued the order on Tuesday February 11.
The tragic events unfolded in the early hours of Saturday February 8 when emergency services responded to a house fire at approximately 5.25am in Benalmádena. Once the blaze was extinguished, firefighters discovered the deceased woman inside the home. The suspect, her husband, was later arrested.
He is being investigated for murder in the context of gender violence, child abuse, criminal damage, and arson. Reports indicate that the couple had a history of domestic issues. In January, the victim filed a complaint against her husband for threats, coercion, and insults, but the case was classified as “medium risk” under the VioGén system.
As a result, the judge decided not to grant the restraining order that the victim had requested. Officials have since confirmed that neither the victim nor the prosecutor appealed the decision to a higher court, stating, “neither the complainant nor the prosecutor appealed the decision to a higher court”.
The case has sparked outrage in the local community. On Sunday February 9, over 100 people gathered in Plaza de las Tres Culturas in Benalmádena to honour the victim’s memory and condemn gender-based violence. The crowd observed a minute’s silence, followed by a round of applause as a tribute. Benalmádena’s mayor, Víctor Navas, and other officials attended the event.
This is the second case of a woman allegedly killed by her partner or ex-partner in Spain this year. Additionally, the Prosecutor’s Office had also requested a restraining order for Lina’s ex-husband, who was murdered three weeks later in Benalmádena. Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
