The province of Huelva was the site of a violent storm, including the formation of a water spout described as being similar to a tornado, which tore through coastal towns on Tuesday February 11.

The extreme weather event caused significant damage, blocking roads, toppling trees and destroying sections of streets and rooftops.

The Provincial Consortium of Firefighters of Huelva mobilised personnel from the Ayamonte and Aljaraque fire stations to tackle the aftermath of the storm. Reports of destruction came from Pozo del Camino, where power lines were ripped apart, and trees were brought down by the ferocious winds.

At 3.15pm, Emergencias 112 Andalucía received the first alert, prompting an immediate deployment of eight firefighters and four fire trucks to Pozo del Camino, where numerous streets and homes suffered damage, with some roofs collapsing under the storm’s force.

One of the most alarming incidents occurred in the municipality of Villablanca, where an elderly woman became trapped due to the impact of the tornado-like winds. Firefighters and local police successfully rescued her, and she was reported to be in good condition despite the frightening ordeal.

In the Villa Antonia area, shared between Ayamonte and Isla Cristina, severe material damage was reported. A house on Calle Pulpo suffered a roof collapse, though fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The impact on infrastructure was severe, with the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) announcing the closure of the N-431 road at kilometre 127 near Isla Cristina at 3.45pm. The closure was due to fallen trees obstructing the roadway, making it impossible for vehicles to pass.

Authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage, with clean-up and repair efforts already underway. Residents and emergency services are working together to restore normality in the affected areas while monitoring weather forecasts for any further risks.

For this Wednesday February 12, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued yellow alerts for strong wind and waves on the coast of Granada and western Almería, where windspeeds could reach up to 37kmh. For the most part, though, and for Huelva, it will be a calm and sunny day.
