ARCHIVED - Hooded gunman holds up Alicante petrol station and flees with a chocolate bar
Police are hunting for the suspect who tried to rob La Valle de Aspe Cepsa service station in the Vinalopó Mitjà area of Alicante province
A manhunt has been launched for a hooded gunman who held up a Cepsa petrol station in Aspe, Alicante, fleeing moments later with just a chocolate bar.
The armed suspect entered La Valle de Aspe service station in the town centre just before 8am on Wednesday January 4 and demanded a member of staff hand over money.
However, according to police sources, the garage had only opened two hours earlier and no vehicles had stopped to refuel. The Spanish Government abolished the fuel discount days earlier, and so the majority of drivers had filled up before the New Year to make the most of the outgoing price cuts.
Having committed himself to stealing something from the petrol station, the thief grabbed a chocolate bar and ran.
Three patrols from both the Local Police and Guardia Civil were quickly on the scene and set up a rapid surveillance operation along Avenida de Navarra and at the exits and entrances to Aspe, but were unable to locate the perpetrator.
The investigation is ongoing.
