ARCHIVED - Benidorm hotel worker bailed after British tourist accused him of rape
CCTV footage at the hotel in the Costa Blanca coastal resort reportedly reveals inconsistencies in the woman's account
A member of staff at a hotel in Benidorm has been bailed after he was accused of raping a 43-year-old British tourist who was staying at the establishment with a friend for the New Year.
The man, who worked on security at the hotel, denied the allegations, and security cameras revealed the accused's account of what happened was inconsistent with the footage.
According to a statement made to police, the tourist had been partying in what's known as the 'guiri' area of the town and returned home in the early hours in a drunken state.
She claims her alleged attacker and another male member of the hotel's overnight staff offered to accompany her and her friend to their room as they were heavily intoxicated.
Once in the room, she told National Police one of the men put a pillow over her face and raped her.
The employee, however, claims the two women were extremely drunk and asked for energy drinks to be taken to their room. He told police he then had to return to the room shortly afterwards following noise complaints from other guests.
He added that they requested more alcohol, but he refused.
The alleged victim also told police she had taken out travel insurance that covered compensation for sexual assault.
