ARCHIVED - Alcoy will celebrate Three Kings Day with the oldest parade in Spain
More than 1,000 people will pariticpate in Alcoy's festivities that date back to 1866
Excitement is building in Alcoy as the town prepares to celebrate Three Kings' Day with what is considered to be the oldest Cavalcade (procession) in Spain, documented back to 1866.
The 'act of adoration' has been held continuously since 1885 and was declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest in November 2001.
"The Cavalcade and the Adoration of the Three Kings are the most important religious events held in Alcoy throughout the year and this is demonstrated by the high level of participation of local residents," said José Luis Llopis, head of three parishes in Alcoy.
As part of the religious events, on Friday January 6, all of the parishes will celebrate mass on the solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, and in the morning, a special mass of thanksgiving will be celebrated in the church of San Jorge de Alcoy.
Christmas Trilogy: Pastoretes, Bando and Cavalcade
The act of Pastoretes was celebrated on Sunday January 1 with the offering of gifts to Jesus. During the Bando Real on Wednesday, the 'ambassador' will announce the arrival of the Three Kings and children's letters will be collected ahead of the Cavalcade on Thursday at 6pm.
The parade, organised by Alcoy Town Council's Department of Festivities and the San Jorge Association, will see more than 1,000 Alcoyans dressed as pages and torchbearers, servants and escorts, who will travel through the streets accompanying the Three Kings in decorated carriages and floats, along with local bands and dance groups.
The procession will run through the streets of Camí, Sant Nicolau and Plaza de España where there will be a break in the route to carry out the Adoration (between 8pm and 9pm). Once finished, and after the fireworks display, the procession will continue on its route.
