ARCHIVED - Health Minister urges public to wear masks as new infections skyrocket in Alicante
Mandatory mask-wearing in the Valencia region and rest of Spain was lifted in April
The Valencia region's Health Minister, Miguel Mínguez, has joined a growing band of officials and experts in favour of reintroducing mask-wearing indoors and in crowded places as daily infections and hospital admissions ascend at a rapid rate both nationally and on the Costa Blanca.
The latest figures released by the Valencia region's health department paint a worrying picture; Covid cases have doubled in a week and there are 287 more patients on wards across Alicante and the rest of the community than there were seven days ago.
The Ministry of Health has this week reopened walk-in jab centres to speed up the process of immunisation so that the entire population is fully inoculated, and further onus has been placed on the public to combat the "excessive" spread of the virus with an appeal for "prudence".
During a visit to the Virgen de los Lirios Hospital in Alcoy to mark its 50th anniversary, the Health Minister admitted that there has been an "excessively rapid peak of Covid cases in recent days", and urged the public to "wear masks during this period of rising infections".
"Once again, I want to request solidarity in the responsible use of a mask to protect the elderly and people with pathologies, particularly in closed places with little ventilation and, as is mandatory, on public transport and in health environments," said Mínguez
"We are at an important moment in the Covid pandemic," he stressed, though he assured that hospitals are responding and adapting "in a dynamic way" to the increase in cases.
"Fortunately this is a moment in the pandemic in which the pathology is milder than in previous episodes. The severity of the wave is being felt mainly in the population over 60 years of age who for the moment are requiring conventional hospitalisation rather than admission to the ICU," he added.
