ARCHIVED - Hospital admissions reach highest level since February: Spain Covid update July 6
The cumulative incidence rate in Spain has now breached the 1,000-case mark

The coronavirus pandemic has been rebounding across Spain for weeks, and an increase in daily infections has begun to translate into hospital pressure, as has been observed during previous waves. In fact, the latest update published by the Ministry of Health on July 5 shows that hospital admissions have increased by more than 20% in the last seven days, the highest figure recorded since February.
Faced with this worrying data, Spain’s Health Minister has once again recommended that vulnerable people wear masks at all times and that the rest of the population consider wearing them indoors, in crowded venues. She stated that the upward trend is likely to continue, due to the proliferation of the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants, which now account for 85% of infections in several regions.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
As of Tuesday July 5, a total of 11,586 people were hospitalised for Covid across Spain, which translates into an occupancy rate of 9.56%. Hospitals haven’t seen these kinds of numbers since February 14, when 12,170 beds were occupied.
The sixth wave was at that time declining and the figure continued to drop until the end of March, when there was a change in trend and it increased again.
This number of hospitalised patients represents an increase of more than 13% compared to the same day last week.
In addition, 502 patients are now being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs, an increase of almost 12% in just three days. Today, 5.73% of intensive care beds are occupied by Covid patients.
A total of 148 more Covid-related fatalities have been reported since Friday, bringing the overall death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 108,259.
Coronavirus infections
Since last Friday, 71,818 new coronavirus infections have been registered, of which more than 40,000 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This is around double the number of cases reported at the same time last month.
Since the start of the health crisis, 12,890,002 positive cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Spain.
Cumulative incidence rate
By communities, La Rioja now has the highest cumulative incidence among people over 60 years of age (1,902 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), followed by Madrid (1,694), Extremadura (1,554) and Castilla-La Mancha (1,528).
On the other end of the scale, Andalucía continues to have the lowest figure at just 397.78 cases per 100,000, which is more than 50% below the next region.
Vaccination data
Since the last update, a total of 39,106,675 people, representing 92.7% of the population over the age of 12, have been double jabbed. In addition, 39,242,986 people, or 93%, have received at least one Covid vaccination.
