ARCHIVED - Get out the sunscreen: UV levels are on the rise in Alicante province this week
Experts on the Costa Blanca advise using protective creams and limiting sun exposure to avoid skin cancer

As temperatures continue to climb in Alicante and the province basks in highs of 27℃, dangerous ultraviolet radiation levels are also on the rise this week and experts are warning it's time to start slapping on the sun cream and limiting sun exposure to avoid skin cancer.
Meteorologist Lluís Francés explained that for the rest of the week, at least until Saturday May 14, the UV index will be high or very high, with levels of eight out of a maximum of 10, both on the coast and in the inland regions.
"In these cases, health professionals advise using protective creams and limiting the hours of sun exposure between 12 noon and 6pm, the time slot where the highest intensity of UV radiation is recorded," he said.
Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer and its incidence has been increasing in recent years throughout Spain, with around 6,000 more cases than in 2020 nationally and approximately 600 in the Valencia region.
This particular type of skin cancer develops in the cells (melanocytes) that produce melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its colour. Melanoma can also form in the eyes and, rarely, inside the body, such as in your nose or throat. The exact cause of all melanomas isn't clear, but exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or tanning lamps and beds increases the risk, stress the health experts.
