German tourist suffers brutal sexual assault in Almería before suspect almost drowns
The attacker dove into the sea after attempting to rape a holidaymaker near the Andarax River

A 44-year-old German woman was left seriously injured after a violent attempted rape inside her motorhome in Almería, with the suspected attacker later rescued from the sea by police officers before being arrested.
The incident happened at around 5.30pm on June 21 in a motorhome parking area near the mouth of the Andarax River.
According to the National Police, the 21-year-old suspect forced his way into the woman's camper van armed with a knife and a stick. Investigators say he attempted to sexually assault her and then subjected her to a brutal beating.
The victim suffered severe facial injuries along with multiple cuts, bruises and other wounds during the attack. Police confirmed the alleged assailant did not succeed in raping the woman.
The situation was brought to an end when a passer-by heard screams coming from inside the vehicle and went to investigate. The witness reportedly found the suspect on top of the victim and repeatedly sounded his car horn, causing the attacker to flee into nearby vegetation.
Emergency services and police patrols arrived within minutes. The woman received treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital.
While officers searched the area, one patrol located the suspect hiding nearby. Police say the man then ran towards the sea and dove into the water in an apparent attempt to escape.
Despite rough conditions and strong waves, he swam around 100 metres from shore before becoming exhausted and beginning to sink.
Five National Police officers entered the water to rescue him. After a difficult operation complicated by the sea conditions and the suspect's lack of cooperation, they managed to bring him safely back to shore.
The man was stabilised on the beach before being taken to a medical centre for assessment. All five officers later required medical attention for injuries sustained during the rescue.
The suspect, who police say is currently undocumented and whose identity is still being verified, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and causing injury.
