ARCHIVED - French firm begins converting abandoned Eden Rock in Torrevieja back into a hotel
The company plans to invest 1.5 million euros restoring the disused building in the Vega Baja, Alicante province
French company, ESI Group, has begun restoring the abandoned Eden Rock in Torrevieja, one of the town's first hotels and restaurants, built in the 1970s.
The building overlooking Torrevieja coves welcomed holidaymakers for many years before reportedly becoming notorious as a brothel. It's been derelict for almost a decade, and was at risk of being knocked down before being purchased by ESI, which specialises in the supply of computer equipment across Europe, but has diversified into the tourism sector in recent years, operating family-type hotels.
The plan is to retain the original name and create a three or four star, 30-room hotel with "unbeatable views of the coves of Torrevieja", and employing 10 people locally. The 1.5-million-euro restoration is expected to take 18 months.
According to Théo Marraud des Grottes, an ESI director, the company has already removed tons of rubbish and debris from the Eden Rock, and secured the site with fencing.
"We are now awaiting approval for another phase of the project, the adaptation of the access from Avenida Alfredo Nobel with landscaping, and the construction of a swimming pool attached to the building," he added.
Pending the approval of Costas (the coastal authority), ESI will apply for a regulated licence at the Town Hall.
"There is a demand for family tourism and a hotel like this in Torrevieja, but the project will be unfeasible if the authorisation for the swimming pool is not granted," added ESI.
Torrevieja, one of Alicante's most popular tourist destinations, has 1,772 beds in 861 rooms at 13 hotels, according to data from 2020, in addition to an "enormous supply of tourist apartments".
