ARCHIVED - Foul play suspected in death of woman, 22, who fell from a Benidorm balcony
Police in the Alicante resort are investigating if the victim was pushed to her death by her partner
A 22-year-old man has been provisionally arrested by the National Police in Benidorm on suspicion of murder after his partner plunged to her death from the sixth floor of an apartment block.
Sources close to the investigation have reported that the suspect has been preventatively detained while they determine if the victim, also aged 22, fell accidentally or was pushed.
However, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has indicated that the death, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, December 29, is in fact being investigated as a case of gender violence, given that the suspect was in the apartment at the time of the tragedy.
It has since transpired that the police were called to the home just two hours before the woman’s death in response to a noise complaint from neighbours. Although officers established that the couple had been arguing loudly, they did not feel it necessary to intervene.
The victim’s partner will be held in custody while investigating officers carry out a visual inspection of the suspected crime scene, conduct forensic examinations and question any potential witnesses.
Referring to the escalation of gender violence across the country, Grande-Marlaska pointed to “a terrible succession of crimes, an unusual proliferation that does not respond to any temporal or other pattern." For this reason, he has ordered the state security forces to intensify protection measures for victims of sexist violence and has also announced that measures against "repeat offenders" will be tightened.
In December alone, ten women have been murdered at the hands of their partners, three since Christmas Eve.
