ARCHIVED - First non-tactical roundabout in Spain will be installed in Alicante, but what is it and where will it be located?
The innovative traffic measure is designed to create a safer space for pedestrians and motorists
Spain's first 'non-tactical' or 'non' roundabout, as it's being coined, will be installed in Alicante city to prioritise the mobility of people over vehicles while, at the same time, improving the landscape and sustainability.
Alicante city's Councillor for Employment and Development and head of the Local Development Agency, Mari Carmen de España, explained that the 'roundabout' is "an innovative, sustainable alternative, a new concept designed with pedestrians in mind".
The "non-roundabout" will be the opposite of conventional roundabouts. Basically, the road asphalt will not cross the pedestrian walkway. Instead, at the meeting point, each carriageway continues along its corresponding perpendicular street, separating one from the other and creating a soft platform in the space between them.
Inside the 'non-roundabout' there will be a large, aesthetically "more pleasing" green space of 700 square metres.
So where will Alicante's 'non-tactical' roundabout be located?
The new infrastructure will be constructed at Las Atalayas industrial estate as part of modernisation plans in order to achieve the Advanced Industrial Area status. An intermediate landscaped walkway will be created for pedestrians and traffic will be reduced to one lane.
According to the city council, "the no-roundabout creates a spatial continuum for people, but not for cars and lorries. In other words, pedestrians will be able to cross from one pavement to the other without having to step on the asphalt. This will create a safer space for both pedestrians and drivers.
"As there are no crossings between cars, and between cars and pedestrians, the likelihood of accidents is drastically reduced," added the local authority.
Alicante City Council has budgeted almost 270,000 euros for the project, which is expected to take five months to complete.
