ARCHIVED - Firefighters remove 3rd-floor balcony doors to rescue injured guest from Gandia hotel
Crowds gathered to watch this morning as the injured man was lowered in a ladder truck from his 3rd-storey hotel room in Gandia, Spain
A guest at the Hotel Gandia Playa in Gandia, Valencia had to be rescued by firefighters in a ladder truck this morning, Wednesday July 27, after suffering a serious health issue.
Emergency services, including police and an ambulance, arrived at the hotel at around 9.45am, and a short time later the local fire department arrived with multiple vehicles, including their ladder truck.
According to one witness, David LG Crawford, “many guests at the hotel watched with anticipation as the ladder truck manoeuvred expertly into position”.
A short while later, says David, “the ladder, with a stretcher attached, was raised to the 3rd floor balcony, where emergency personnel removed the balcony doors to assist in the evacuation.”
The scene was followed intently by “curious and concerned guests in the hotel, some from their balconies as well as pool-side… along with local residents on the street,” according to Mr Crawford.
“After an agonizing 25-minute wait, the man, strapped to a yellow backboard and in an orange rescue basket, was carefully lifted to the ladder’s stretcher and secured.”
“While an emergency worker comforted a person out front of the hotel, the ladder was manoeuvred away from the balcony, and carefully lowered to the ground.”
It has not yet been revealed by police or sources from the emergency services what the cause of the injury was or the current state of the patient, but when he was removed from the hotel, he had an IV in and his neck and head were in a brace.
“Six firefighters delicately lifted the man from the rescue basket and placed him on the ambulance stretcher, which was then carefully loaded into the waiting ambulance at 11am,” says David.
“Crowds quickly dispersed as crew put their equipment away and left.”
