ARCHIVED - Fiestas will go ahead in Benejuzar, Alicante following last minute u-turn
Earlier this week the Town Hall in the Vega Baja cancelled all 2022 festivals days before its Moors and Christians fiesta
A last minute agreement over an increased fiesta budget has been reached by all political parties in Benejúzar meaning next month's Moors and Chrisitians celebrations and all other festivals in 2022 will now go ahead.
Just three days ago, the Town Hall announced the cancellation of this year's fiestas, including Christmas, due to a dispute over increasing the paltry 80,000 euros allocated to stage the events to a more realistic 180,000 euros.
The reason the initial allocation was so low was because it was approved during the height of the Covid pandemic when public events were prohibited.
In a last ditch attempt to stage all the scheduled fiestas, the local authority held a second Extraordinary Plenary meeting on Friday morning, May 27, and this time the increased budget received unanimous support from the council represented by Ciudadanos, the Socialist Party and the Popular Party.
Following the consensus decision, Benejúzar Mayor, Rosa García, thanked the party groups for "agreeing to vote in favour of the Benejúzar fiestas," and apologised to members of the public, "especially to those people, groups and associations involved in the patron saint fiestas for the contradictions in public representation in recent days".
"It also essential to convey the message that as an institution we defend administrative rigour and comply with the law," she added.
