ARCHIVED - Father who fled Belgium with his 2-year-old son is arrested in Alicante, Spain
The 50-year-old detained on the Costa Blanca faces five years in prison for child abduction
Police in Alicante, Spain have arrested a 50-year-old Belgian man who fled his home country with his young son at the beginning of April.
The detainee, who does not have custody of the two-year-old boy, faces up to five years in jail for child abduction.
According to National Police sources, the fugitive is locked in a custody battle with his ex-wife and at the beginning of last month, rather than dropping the child off at nursery to be picked up by his mother, he fled to Spain with the toddler.
Belgian authorities tracked him to Antwerp, where it's believed the father and his young son took a ferry to Mallorca, but from there their whereabouts were unknown.
Finally, a European Arrest Warrant for Extradition was issued, as well as a missing person alert for the minor.
Still driving the same car with Belgian number plates and loaded with belongings, the 50-year-old was stopped by two National Police officers from the Alicante North District police station.
After checking the driver's identity, they corroborated that he was subject to the aforementioned warrant and he was arrested. The child, who was in the back of the car, was taken to the Provincial Home of Alicante and will be returned to his mother.
The detainee was handed over to Alicante's Central Court of Instruction which will take the necessary steps to execute the extradition order.
