ARCHIVED - Fatalities spike as hospital pressure eases: Valencia Covid update February 9
68 fewer Covid patients in hospitals in Alicante province and the rest of the region, but there were 47 more deaths today
Once again, the latest update from the Valencian Regional Ministry of Health is a mixed bag of statistics, with data showing a drop in hospital admissions, in line with Spain as a whole, as well as a slight increase in cases and 47 Covid-related fatalities.
According to the Ministry, the figures are "very similar" and follow the same positive trend of recent days, "confirming the region has surpassed the peak of the sixth wave".
As has been the case for several weeks, the highest incidence rate is amongst children, and from Thursday February 10, health departments will begin administering the second jab to almost 110,000 children aged 9 to 11 in schools to try to stem the spread of the prevalent Omicron variant.

The regional Ministry of Health has reported 9,934 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, up slightly from 8,985 on Tuesday February 8. This brings the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,217,057.
By province: 925 have been recorded in Castellón (149,773 in total), 3,273 in Alicante (429,451) and 5,736 in Valencia (637,828). There are five unassigned cases.
According to the health data, there are currently 124,070 active cases, which represent 10.10% of the total positives.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 1,581 people admitted to hospital with Covid, down from 1,649 on Tuesday, 144 of them in ICU (five less): 221 in the province of Castellón, 16 in ICU; 508 in the province of Alicante, 49 of them in ICU; and 852 in the province of Valencia, 79 in ICU.
22,341 people have overcome the virus since the last update, almost three times higher than the number of new infections, which means the total number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic now stands at 1,095,658.
By provinces, the recoveries are distributed as follows: 133,881 in Castellón, 390,157 in Alicante and 571,560 in Valencia. There are 60 unassigned cases.
Fatalities
47 Covid-related deaths have been reported since Tuesday's update, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in the Valencia region to 8,770: 1,001 in the province of Castellón, 3,364 in Alicante and 4,405 in Valencia.
The deceased, who died within the last seven days with the exception of two, who passed away in January, are 24 men, aged between 56 and 94, and 23 women between 52 and 107-years-old.
