ARCHIVED - Children in Alicante to be given second Covid jab from this week
Almost 80,000 children aged between 5 and 11 in Alicante have already received the first vaccine

The Valencian Ministry of Health will begin administering the second jab to almost 110,000 children aged 9 to 11 in schools from Thursday February 10.
So far, 80,000 children aged 5 to 11 in Alicante province have already received the first dose of the vaccine, and the health department remains confident this second drive will complete the vaccination process that began on December 15 last year.

Over the course of the next couple of weeks, those children who, for whatever reason, have not been jabbed and have authorisation from their parents or guardians, will also be vaccinated, according to a statement from the Regional Ministry of Health.
In the first phase of child vaccination, doses were given to pupils aged 9 to 11, as well as children in special education centres, rural schools and those with special health problems, such as immunosuppressed or oncology conditions.
By provinces, 37,356 schoolchildren were vaccinated before Christmas in the province of Alicante, 12,628 in Castellón and 58,197 in the province of Valencia.

Currently, 65.10% of schoolchildren in the Valencian Community (10 points above the national average), aged between 5 and 11 years, have already received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
In addition, the coverage rate has exceeded 76% in the 9, 10 and 11 age groups. Since the child vaccination campaign began last December, 226,998 doses of the paediatric vaccine have been administered: 79,692 in Alicante; 26,442 in Castellón; and 120,884 in Valencia.
What is a cause for concern, with the highest incidence amongst children, is the fact that youngsters, like adults, awaiting their second dose who have tested positive for Covid will have to wait eight weeks after diagnosis - with or without symptoms - to receive the jab.
