ARCHIVED - Extreme temperatures to hit Alicante from Thursday
Aemet has issued a special weather warning due to the heatwave expected to hit the region of Valencia, including the province of Alicante
The first official heatwave of the summer in Spain is on its way to Alicante this week, with extreme temperatures reaching up to 43ºC in some parts of the province.
Aemet, the Spanish State Meteorological Agency, has issued a special warning about the heatwave, which will affect most of the country (including the neighbouring region of Murcia) from Wednesday (August 11) until Monday (August 16).
Temperatures in the Vega Baja area will begin to rise from Thursday, reaching up to 40º, and the minimum temperature at night is forecast to be around 25º, with high levels of humidity.
Meanwhile, the Marina Alta area can also expect high temperatures, especially the inland areas, with temperatures ranging from 39 to 43 degrees. Coastal towns such as Dénia or Xábia will have slightly milder temperatures, although they could still reach up to 37ºC.
Aemet has also indicated that the worst days of the heatwave will be Friday (August 13) and Sunday (August 15).
Such extreme temperatures pose a health risk to the population, especially to the most vulnerable (children and the elderly) and Aemet, along with several other national and regional authorities, have provided instructions on how keep safe during the heatwave.
Recommendations include finding cool shaded areas, drinking lots of water, avoiding exercise during the hottest hours and reducing alcohol and caffeine intake.
The emergency services in Alicante have also recommended taking extra precautions with small children, sick people and the elderly, as they are the most vulnerable.
