ARCHIVED - Elche gets beach-ready ahead of an influx of summer tourists
Contracts have been awarded for beach bars and sunbeds in the Elche Baix Vinalopó town, Alicante province
As temperatures soar and the summer season lurks just around the corner, Elche is making final preparations to ensure the town is beach ready ahead of an influx of holidaymakers.
The municipality's tourist department, VisitElche has awarded a one-year contract to Modella Spain 2004 SL to provide a 70 m2 beach bar in El Robello, together with a 210 m2 space for sunbeds and umbrellas for a total fee of almost 12,000 euros.
At Playa Arenales del Sol, a 'freelancer' has been awarded the 1,400 euro contract to offer sun loungers and umbrellas on a 210 m2 plot, and a further agreement for a second stretch of sand has still to be finalised.
The standard fees for providing the beach services were reduced by up to 85% in 2020, but have been increased for 2022 to those "approaching the usual prices prior to the outbreak of Covid".
In total, this year, "which is expected to be normal", there will be seven beach bars along Elche's popular coastline; two in El Altet, two in Arenales, and one each in playas Carabassí, El Pinet, El Robello and La Marina.
A total of 449 personnel, including tourism assistants, management and marketing staff will retain their positions within VisitElche's department this summer season.
