Alicante-Elche airport nears 20 million passengers in record-breaking 2025
International travellers, led by the British, drive an 8.5% increase in passenger numbers
Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport has capped 2025 with a new record, nearly reaching 20 million passengers. Final figures show the airport handled 19,950,394 travellers last year, surpassing the previous record of 18.4 million set in 2024. This represents growth of more than 1.5 million passengers, or an 8.5% increase compared to 2024.“It has been a phenomenal year for Alicante-Elche Airport,” said a spokesperson from Aena. “Our monthly and annual figures reflect the strong demand from both domestic and international travellers, particularly from the UK.”
The airport had already marked a major milestone in August, when it handled more than two million passengers in a single month for the first time. December’s figures continued that trend, with 1,318,828 passengers, reflecting the growing consistency of travel throughout the year.
International traffic continues to dominate at the Costa Blanca gateway. In 2025, 88% of all passengers arrived from abroad, reaching 17,458,244 travellers, a 10.6% increase on the previous year. British visitors led the way with 6,553,349 passengers, followed by Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland. Meanwhile, domestic traffic fell slightly to 2,475,216 passengers, a 4% drop, signalling a levelling off after the post-pandemic boom.
Flight movements also reached record levels, with 126,081 take-offs and landings, up 8.4% on 2024.
While celebrating these figures, the airport is also preparing for the next phase of growth. Aena has announced plans for a major expansion, including a new boarding pier following the demolition of Terminal 1 and General Aviation buildings. The project, part of the Port Planning Document (DORA III), aims to increase capacity to at least 26 million passengers annually.
The works, which also cover improvements to taxiways, parking areas and urban infrastructure, are expected to cost €1.154 billion and may extend beyond 2031. An international consortium of firms including JFS Architectes, One Works Spa, and Viarium Ingeniería is currently emerging as the likely contractor.
“With these upgrades, we are not just increasing capacity but also improving the passenger experience and operational efficiency,” Aena added.
Alicante-Elche Airport’s record year underscores its role as the Costa Blanca’s key gateway, attracting millions of tourists while steadily preparing for future growth.
