ARCHIVED - Elche shaken by minor earthquake felt 20 km away
Despite a magnitude of 2.2 on the Richter scale, tremors were felt further afield in the Baix Vinolopo, Alicante province.
A minor earthquake measuring 2.2 on the Richter shook Elche this afternoon (Tuesday July 20) with tremors felt in El Altet, some 20 kilometres away.
The epicentre was recorded in the Bonavista urbanisation, on the outskirts of the town at 12.13pm, according to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), but residents in neighbouring districts, dozens of kilometres away, felt the vibrations. In fact, some people living in El Altet close to Alicante-Elche Airport, confused the seismic movement with air traffic.
The IGN is now studying the repercussions of the quake, and residents are asked to register any noticeable vibrations on the institute's twitter account.
