ARCHIVED - Elche brings in the big guns for fight against mighty mosquitoes
A campaign to keep mosquitoes at bay has been stepped up in the Baix Vinalopó town of Elche in the province of Alicante.
Elche Council has brought in the big guns to intensify fumigation against mosquitoes and will reinforce efforts to control insects and rodents in hard-to-access areas in the coming months.
Heavy-duty machinery was unveiled today, Monday, May 17, to assist with the spring campaign, which began several weeks ago.
A large-range nebulizer cannon, three spray cannons, a zodiac, an electric motorcycle, a quad and a drone make up the pest busting fleet; residents can be assured that this council means business!
Councillor for Health, Mariola Galiana, said: "We work hard throughout the year to combat the plague of mosquitoes, but its effectiveness depends a lot on the climate and also on the actions that residents carry out in their private properties".
To help combat the plague, the public is being urged to keep swimming pools, irrigation ponds and other areas of water accumulation clean.
Elche is home to areas of salt marshes and wetlands, which makes it "difficult to exterminate these type of pests".
But the council stressed the plan "isn't to eradicate the mosquito, since it contributes to the ecosystem and to the balance of biodiversity, but to minimise the overpopulation that occurs after intense rains and high temperatures".
"Treatments are currently being intensified due to the heavy rains in spring, but the service will be carried out throughout the year," added the council.
