ARCHIVED - Elche beach homes broken into in wave of weekend burglaries
Several houses on the front of El Pinet beach in Elche were broken into and ransacked
Police in Elche are investigating a spate of break-ins at a row of beachfront houses last weekend in which grilles, doors and windows were forced and several properties were ransacked.
The homes on the frontline of El Pinet beach have been targeted in the past, due in part to the fact many are not occupied all year round, but on this occasion, substantial damage has also been caused.
It's not clear yet exactly what was taken, but it's believed the burglars took advantage of the recent heavy rain and lack of people visiting the beach, giving them the opportunity to target a number of houses without being noticed.
Residents living on the beachfront traditionally experience problems during torrential rain and coastal phenomena due to their proximity to the sea.
In the past, the sea level has risen to such an extent it has rushed over the rocks in front of the beach homes, causing extensive flooding, as was the case in December 2016 and during storm Gloria in January 2020.
In the wake of storm Gloria, Elche Mayor, Carlos González, approved plans to "add resources for the beaches of Elche to help them recover", and the stretch of sand was on the verge of being designated a dog-friendly beach before being ruled out.
