ARCHIVED - EasyJet baggage handlers break 10,000GBP triathlete bike on flight to Spain
The professional athlete discovered the damage when she arrived at Alicante airport
Professional triathlete India Lee, who has competed for Great Britain on many occasions in events around the globe, voiced her shock at discovering that her £10,000 bike had been severely damaged when she arrived in Spain on an EasyJet flight last week.
Ms Lee arrived in Alicante on Tuesday February 8 for a three-week training stint but said that, when she examined her luggage, the thru-axel on her valuable bike had been “sheared in half,” while other parts of the kit were visibly damaged.
“I unzipped the bag and just stood there staring at it with my hands on my knees,” she said. “The more I looked at it, the more I saw how bad it was.”
The professional athlete shared photos of the destroyed bike on her social media account and said that the bike must have been subjected to “extreme force” during transit, as she had “meticulously padded” the equipment prior to the flight.
An EasyJet spokesperson said: "We are very sorry for the damage caused to Ms Lee’s bicycle during transit.
“We know how crucial it is for customers to feel confident that items like this will be well cared for when travelling with us, and so we are urgently investigating this with our ground handling partners in Bristol and Alicante.
“We have been in touch with Ms Lee to apologise and offer our assistance with the cost of the bicycle repairs.”
Hi @easyJet, I’ve landed into Spain to find my bike completely shattered. Please can you help me sort this asap. I’m a pro athlete and it’s my job to ride a bike. 😢 pic.twitter.com/xst1wAwTmM
