ARCHIVED - Dutch fugitive wanted for threats and extortion arrested in El Campello
The fifty-three-year-old was in hiding at a property in the Alicante town to avoid a nine-year prison sentence
A Dutch fugitive accused of making threats and extortion, for which he faces nine years in jail if found guilty in his home country, has been arrested in El Campello.
The detainee is accused of blackmailing multiple organisations in the Netherlands between 2016 and 2021, sending numerous emails demanding 850,000 euros in exchange for not starting a smear campaign against them.
According to Spanish police, he recently received a suspicious payment at a petrol station in Villajoyosa, which is believed to be related to the threats.
A European Arrest Warrant was issued by a Dutch court earlier this year, and police in the Netherlands collaborated with Alicante's Organised Crime unit after it became apparent the fugitive could be hiding in Alicante.
After making several enquiries, investigators from the National Police discovered the fifty-three-old was holed up in a property in El Campello. Officers carried out a discreet surveillance operation until the suspect left the house, at which point he was surrounded and arrested.
The Dutchman has been handed over to the Judicial Court of Alicante, which will now begin the process of extradition.
