ARCHIVED - Dog dies in blaze at five-storey block of flats in Benidorm
14 residents were confined to their properties in the Costa Blanca coastal resort and two were evacuated

A dog has tragically died after flames ripped through the first floor of a five-storey block of flats in Benidorm.
The blaze broke out at the residential building in the Foietes-Colonia Madrid neighbourhood just before 11am on Monday morning, January 23, and thick black smoke billowed into the street. A clip shared by Alicante Provincial Firefighters shows fierce flames ravaging a corner façade and clearly affecting a second room.

The smoke quickly consumed the first floor stairwell, and residents in 14 flats were ordered to stay indoors while two people were evacuated.
While no people were injured, a pet dog lost its life in the fire.
According to fire sources, one apartment was gutted in the blaze, in particular the room in which the blaze broke out. An investigation into the cause is underway.
A dozen Benidorm firefighters equipped with a heavy urban pump, a ladder and a firefighting van managed to extinguish the fire by 12.30pm and the affected property and staircase were mechanically ventilated due to the intense smoke generated by the fire.
Last week, a forest fire raged for more than 24 hours in the Alicante town of Aigües de Busot, forcing the evacuation of 200 residents. The blaze caused extensive damage, destroying around 100 hectares of bush as strong winds fanned the flames and hindered firefighting efforts.
