ARCHIVED - Dog attacked by wild boar as daylight sightings rise in the Marina Alta, Alicante
Groups of wild boar roaming the streets of Denia and Parcent are becoming commonplace
Sightings of wild boar roaming the streets in Alicante province are nothing new, but over the last few days, their presence has become increasingly common in the Marina Alta area where there has been a report of an attack on a pet dog.
The 'overpopulation' of wild boar in the area, which means that they have to find food outside their natural habitat, has led to groups of the animals appearing to show no fear of humans or cars and wandering around the streets and rummaging in bins in Denia, Parcent and other towns in broad daylight.
And according to residents in Parcent, wild boar attacked a dog that was fortunately rescued by its owner this week, and they have highlighted the number of road traffic accidents "due to the large presence" of the species.
In the last 12 months, boar running into the road have caused three road traffic accidents in Denia, one of which led to a three-car pile-up in which three people were injured.
The wild animals have also been blamed for causing extensive damage to crops and municipal furniture.
To try to tackle the proliferation of wild boar, Denia Town Hall placed a number of humane trap-cages across the municipality four months ago, but hopes of catching and relocating large numbers of the animals came to nothing and the "ineffective" traps were withdrawn in April.
The council said the results were not as expected, and added: "We are not going to pay for something that is not as decisive as it should be."
