ARCHIVED - Wild boar trap-cages fail to tackle growing populations in Denia
The Town Hall in the Marina Alta area of Alicante province is withdrawing the "ineffective" humane traps
Wild boar populations soared during the pandemic as the animals were given an almost free reign of both the countryside and urban areas due to a nationwide lockdown and subsequent movement restrictions.
Images of wild boar and their young roaming residential streets became commonplace, and since then, the number of accidents caused by boars trying to cross roads in Denia has risen with reports of attacks on farmers and damage to crops.
To try to tackle the proliferation of the species, Denia Town Hall placed a number of humane trap-cages across the municipality three months ago. But high hopes of catching and relocating large numbers of the animals have been dashed and after 12 weeks, the system has "not produced the desired results".
"After three months of testing, the cages are now being dismantled by the company awarded the project," explained the Councillor for Ecological Transition, Maite Pérez on Thursday April 28.
The humane traps were in operation throughout January, February and March, and although "there were days when five or six" wild boars were caught, "it was not the result the Town Hall expected or the result the company had predicted".
"We are not going to be paying for something that is not as decisive as it should be", added the councillor.
