ARCHIVED - Costa Blanca beaches with accessible shaded bathing areas this summer
The Valencia region's tourist board has installed 'bathe and rest zones' so that "everyone can enjoy the coastline"
The Costa Blanca is renowned for its golden sandy beaches and crystal waters, a tourism jewel in the region's crown. And in a bid to ensure everybody can enjoy the spectacualr coastline, the Valencia Community's Tourist Board has installed accessible shaded areas with seating and assistance for people with reduced mobility at a dozen beaches on the Costa Blanca.
At a cost of almost 110,000 euros, the 'bathe and rest' structures will be in operation throughout the summer at beaches in Alicante, Santa Pola, Torrevieja, Pilar de la Horadada, Denia, Villajoyosa, Benicarló, Oropesa del Mar, Benicasim, Chilches, la Pobla de Farnals and Cullera.
The triangular stainless steel metal structures are sunk into the beach area with an average water height of 0.50 metres. In addition, they have an upper awning-canvas that protects users sitting on the seats from the sun's rays.
Each structure has a walkway with handrails to make it easier for people with reduced mobility to access the area itself and the swimming channels which are clearly marked out with buoys.
The Regional Secretary for Tourism, Francesc Colomer, said the "improvements to beach infrastructure will make the coastline, which is our main tourist icon and attribute, more gratifying for everyone".
"These structures are designed to make the bathing experience more comfortable and inclusive," he added.
