San Juan beach in Alicante revamped with changing rooms and toilets
The Alicante city beachfront will also be decked out with a training area and customer service desk

Alicante City Council has this week approved a 1,583,838-million-euro project to develop a new sports and leisure complex for public use on Avinguda de Niza, where the San Juan beach craft market is currently located. The project, which should take around six months to complete, will commence after the summer season, and the market will be moved next year.
The impressive undertaking will consist of prefabricated changing rooms that can facilitate up to 12 people at one time, complete with showers and toilets, as well as a storage unit for kayaks, surfboards and other sports equipment used on the beach.
Shaded areas and pergolas will be erected with the aim of creating a local meeting point and training space, and the structure will be completed with an information and customer service booth.
The Department of Urban Planning and Sports had already outlined its plan to create more green areas around the facility while preserving the existing bike lane. At the same time, the pedestrian crossing will be moved and new footpaths will be installed.
For the project to go ahead, a new location will have to be found for the popular summer beach-side markets from 2023, a move that was previously agreed by the Local Council of Commerce in July. A proposal was put forward to relocate the stalls to Calle Milan but this has since been dismissed, and the mayor of Occupation of Public Roads, Manuel Jiménez, has indicated that "he will meet shortly with locals and merchants to study the best location."
The market will remain on Avinguda de Niza until September this year before moving to its new home next summer.
