ARCHIVED - Alicante reveals plans for new €7M urban park with sports facilities by San Juan beach

The major investment will see a new green area and multi-purpose courts at Playa de San Juan in Alicante province.

Alicante city council has unveiled the plans for a new sports and leisure complex behind the Playa de san Juan beach and residential area, creating substantial new facilities for residents as well as providing new leisure attractions for those visiting the city and its surrounding holiday areas.

Alicante's €7M plan for a new 298,000 sqm urban park La Condomina and North Zone of Playa de San Juan will include a Sports Park with a rugby field, football pitch, two multipurpose semi-covered tracks, a BMX circuit, a sand field for beach volleyball and a climbing wall.   

The project is also designed to create a space for events and shows, which will mean moving the current motor home parking space next to San Juan beach to nearby land.

There will also be routes for pedestrians and cyclists, linking neighbourhoods in the area.

The council is currently finalising the plans to be put out to tender and hopes to start work on the new urban park next year.

"In 2022, the project will be carried out in phases, starting with the rugby field, which is one of our most important current needs. We will then carry out the remaining phases in the following years, hoping to finish in 2024," said the council.
