Costa Blanca hit by seventh earthquake in a week
The latest quake, measuring 2.4, struck near the border of San Miguel de Salinas
Yet another earthquake has struck the Vega Baja area, the seventh to hit in as many days. The entire Costa Blanca is a hotbed for seismic activity but even for this active region, this number in such a short period of time is rather disquieting.
The latest quake was recorded at 7.56pm on Tuesday October 15. Its epicentre was in the Sierra Escalona, which borders the municipalities of Orihuela, Pilar de la Horadada and San Miguel de Salinas.
It measured a fairly mild 2.4 on the Richter scale and at a depth of just 4 kilometres, it sent minor shockwaves through border towns between Alicante and the Region of Murcia. In fact, several people reported feeling the tremor as far away as Torrevieja.
Just the day before, at 10.49pm, the earth shook as a tremor with a magnitude of 2.1 was recorded in Los Montesinos.
And last week, several more mild earthquakes were registered in the same vicinity, all in one night.
While this latest quake is indeed the seventh recorded by the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the experts say that it’s nothing be alarmed about.
“Although it seems that many earthquakes are occurring in a row in this area, it is still within the normal range for an area of high seismic activity such as ours," a spokesperson from Proyecto Mastral added.
