Two decomposing bodies discovered on Costa Blanca beach
The corpses were found floating in the waters of El Campello, near Benidorm
Two bodies in an advanced state of decomposition were discovered within a few hours of each other floating in the waters off El Campello, a small fishing village just 35 kilometres from Benidorm.
The first corpse was picked up by a fishing boat shortly before noon on Tuesday October 15, floating around a kilometre from the coast of Villajoyosa.
The drama continued later that same evening when a second body, equally decomposed, appeared in the water in the nearby Cala Piteres area. This corpse was removed from the sea at 7.30pm.
Both bodies were initially transferred to the yacht club in the port by the Guardia Civil until a judge arrived to authorise their removal. A post-mortem will now be carried out to determine the exact cause of death and attempts will be made to establish the identity of the two tragic victims.
Early indications point to migrants who have may have fallen from a small boat smuggling irregular immigrants into Spain. The level of decomposition also suggests that the bodies had been in the water for some time.
