ARCHIVED - Costa Blanca emergency services urge caution after surge in rescues and five deaths over Easter
The Valencia region's Emergencias 112 coordinated 63 rescues and searches for hikers over the Easter holiday period
Emergency services on the Costa Blanca were put through their paces over Easter, the first festive period without restrictions in two years, which understandably led to a high influx of visitors to coastal towns, mountainous areas and natural parks across the Valencia region.
On the flip side, this led to a surge in accidents and emergencies, and 112 Comunitat Valenciana received a whopping 136,964 calls for assistance between April 9 and 25, and coordinated response teams had to deal with 41,570 different incidents.
Over the 16-day period, police, fire crews and paramedics were involved in 63 rescues and searches for hikers - an average of almost four each day - prompting a public appeal for "extreme caution" from the regional secretary for Safety and Emergencies, José María Ángel.

In particular, the government is urging the public to take "appropriate safety measures when hiking or climbing in the mountains, just as in other activities such as driving".
"It is vitally important for the public to remember the three Ps: planning, precaution and prudence when taking trips into the countryside, as not everyone is in the same physical condition and we must respect our own limits when planning these sort of leisure activities," warned the regional secretary for emergencies.
Of the 63 searches and rescues, 26 involved helicopters and the remainder were carried out by land rescue teams, with a total of five fatalities. During the Easter period in 2021, there were 42 search/rescue operations and four deaths.
By province, 39 of the 63 incidents took place in Alicante province where there were two drownings in Calpe, 19 in Valencia and five in Castellón.
A breakdown of the 41,570 incidents that 112 responded to shows: 64% (26,430) were related to health issues; 14% (5,979) related to safety; 4% (1,492) accidents; 1% (404) rescues. By provinces, most occurred in Valencia (20,573), followed by Alicante with 15,713 and Castellón with 4,837.
The 112 emergency telehphone number is available in various European languages, and of the total calls received, 639 were handled in English.
