Firefighters have recovered the lifeless body of a 24-year-old man who fell down a waterfall in the Alicante town Bolulla before being carried along the course of the Algar River.

Following a lengthy land and air search operation, the victim's body was tragically found by firefighters in the Algar reservoir on Sunday evening, April 17.

Alicante Provincial Fire Brigade was mobilised at around 1.30pm, minutes after the alarm was raised, and witnesses in the area claim they had seen the young man fall before his body appeared to be carried away in the current.

An Alicante rescue helicopter began scouring the area, but had just attended an earlier incident in the small Alicante village of Abdet, and was forced to return to base to refuel.

A second Generalitat Valenciana helicopter was drafted in, and with the support of firefighters, Civil Protection and medical emergency services, the search continued until the young man's body was discovered at 7.26pm.

In a separate incident, Alicante firefighters rescued a 73-year-old British woman who fainted whilst walking in Sierra de Bernia on Monday April 18, and hurt her wrist. She was airlifted "in a stable condition" to San Vicente station where an ambulance was waiting to attend to her injuries.
