ARCHIVED - Cleaning staff at Vega Baja Hospital postpone strike until January 25
An error by the Ministry of Health means there are not enough staff at the hospital in Orihuela to function properly, according to union reps
A miscalculation by the Ministry of Health has left staff unable to "function properly" at Vega Baja Hospital prompting a threat to strike.
According to the workers' union CCOO Orihuela, the health department made an error in calculating the size of the facility, omitting 2,800 square metres of the hospital from the plans, leaving the cleaning team understaffed.
They had planned to strike on Monday January 10, but after crisis meetings with the regional Ministry of Health decided to postpone the industrial action until January 25 to allow for further talks.
CCOO claims that in addition to the 2,800 sqm, a further 467 sqm was also overlooked, and has stressed that employee levels have shrunk from 85 cleaning staff in 2012 to just 64.
As such, the union has denounced that the expansion of the hospital's dimensions has not been taken into account, and furthermore that the service contractor, Ferrovial, which took over in August 2021, plans to reduce the workforce by a further 20 members of staff.
President of Vega Baja Hospital's cleaning committee, Maria Pilar Garcia Albero, acknowledged in a statement that the Department of Health "did not correctly quantify the size of the building" and, therefore, "the number of employees for the cleaning service is out of date".
She also said that meetings are scheduled to take place over the next three days between the contractor, hospital management and the works committee to try to reach an agreement or "the strike will take place".
