ARCHIVED - Calpe resurrects Oktoberfest for 2021
The Alicante festival will celebrate beer and food produced throughout Spain
A tradition that has existed in the Alicante town of Calpe for more than 30 years, the Germany-inspired beer festival will be revived during the October bank holiday weekend this year following a meeting of the party committee on Tuesday September 28.
The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on the annual festivals usually held in the Community of Valencia, and the committee hopes that the 2021 edition of the iconic Oktoberfest will not only promote local Spanish beer and food, but will also raise much-needed funds for the events planned in 2022.
In addition to world famous beer, the Oktoberfest will serve Spanish delicacies at competitive prices and according to the organisers of the event, Calpe City Council, a large tent will be erected in the Parc de la Creativitat with live music.
October has always been a month of celebration in Calpe, with the Sant Francesc pilgrimage and the Moors and Christians festival in honour of the patron saint, Santíssim Crist de la Suor, and Oktoberfest aims to end the festivities with a bang, according to party councillor Paco Avargues.
“The Oktoberfest is a good way to gradually resume the festive activity in the municipality and at the same time it will allow organisers to raise money for future celebrations,” according to Mayoress Ana Sala.
