ARCHIVED - Calpe decrees three days of mourning after the bodies of two drowned cousins are recovered
The young men, aged 18 and 24, drowned after jumping off Peñón de Ifach into the sea in Calpe, Alicante province
Maritime Rescue and Alicante fire crews have recovered a second body following a 24-hour search for two missing males who jumped off Peñón de Ifach into the sea in Calpe on Sunday April 24.
On Sunday night, rescuers located the lifeless body of 18-year-old Juan Sebastián Ochoa, a Red Cross volunteer who jumped into the water from the rock's heliport before being pulled underwater and disappearing just after 4pm.
Initiial reports suggested the two males were teenage friends, but it has since transpired they were cousins, and the older of the two, José Antonio Ochoa, aged 24, perished after jumping in to try to save the 18-year-old. He was reportedly engulfed in high waves and dragged under by the sea currents. His body was located just after 11am on Monday April 25.
The alarm was initially raised by a third person who witnessed the tragic scenes and, wearing a lifejacket, entered the water to help. He was unable to reach the two Colombian cousins and alerted the emergency services.
A rescue helicopter from Salvamento Marítimo and another from the Alicante Consortium of Firefighters, a Red Cross rescue boat, a Guardia Civil patrol boat with a detachment of the Special Group of Underwater Activities (GEAS) and several patrols of the Local Police of Calpe were all involved in the search operation.
In the wake of the tragedy, Calpe Town Hall has decreed three days of official mourning. Flags will fly at half-mast on public buildings and all public events organised by the local authority have been suspended.
