ARCHIVED - Calpe beach closed amid sewage spill scare
Town Council warns of possible sewage spills and is "taking preventative measures" at Arenal beach in the Marina Alta, Alicante province.
Access to a section of the Arenal beach in Calpe has been closed to the public following the "almost simultaneous" rupture of two sewage collector pipes that move the wastewater to the municipality's sewage plant on Monday morning (August 2).
"Considering that in the next few hours the flow may increase and there may be a release of wastewater in Calle La Niña, it has been decided to close the Arenal beach between the river mouth and Capri buildings. Containment measures have already been put in place with the provision of sand barriers to prevent the sewage from reaching the beach, and Aguas de Calpe will extract any accumulation of water that may occur", assures Calpe Council.
Repair work has been underway since early this morning, and it is hoped one of the collectors will be fixed before midday and the second repaired by late afternoon.
"The chances two collectors breaking simultaneously are quite remote and so, while the repair of the installations is the priority at the moment, in the coming days we will look into how and why the breakages have occurred", says the municipal water supply and services company, Aguas de Calpe.
The risk of sewage spillage comes at the worst possible time with Calpe's beaches packed with locals and tourists, and the council says it "regrets the inconvenience caused by this exceptional and unforeseeable situation".
