Cabo Roig residents frustrated at delay in reopening cliff walk
The council promised in September that the Orihuela Costa promenade would be fully reopened
Two months ago, Orihuela Costa residents were delighted to learn that the blocked up section of the cliff walk between Cabo Roig and Aguamarina, closed since 2021, would finally be reopened. In September, the City Council was given permission to urgently removed the gate, but nothing has happened yet.
With the summer far behind us, frustrated locals are taking action and putting pressure on the powers that be to allow the public to access the promenade in front of the Bellavista urbanisation.
Residents of the Calas de Campoamor neighbourhood have recently written to the council, requesting that money be made available in next year’s municipal budgets to compensate those living in Bellavista and finally reopen the walkway.
The cliff walk stretching along the Orihuela Costa coast has always been an attraction for both tourists and locals, but part of the promenade was fenced off by homeowners who didn’t want hordes of people traipsing past their front gardens every day. While that’s understandable enough, it splits the path in the middle, forcing people to walk a kilometre out of their way to rejoin the coast.
Amazingly, the piece of land causing all this trouble is a narrow corridor just over 2 metres wide and 30 metres long.
The pedestrian path, which connects Aguamarina with La Caleta beach, has remained closed since 2021, when a court ruling forced the City Council block it off and give private access to Bellavista residents. The issue has been going back and forth for more than 20 years but on September 7, the authorities were given permission to expropriate the land and open it to the public.
Those hoping to see council workers tearing down the wall have been disappointed, however, and there’s unlikely to be any quick resolution, since the Bellavista owners will almost certainly appeal against the expropriation.
