Cabo Roig cliff walk set to reopen to the public
A stretch of the path on the popular Orihuela Costa has been closed since 2021
After years of heated debate, the Orihuela City Council is going to reopen the stretch of the cliff walk which connects Aguamarina with La Caleta in Cabo Roig to the public. The path, which is flanked by the rugged coast on one side and homes on the other, is just 30 metres long and 2 metres wide, but its closure has resulted in a detour of more than 1 kilometre to access the beach.
The previous administration had tried and failed to reopen the popular cliff walk to the public, but the council confirmed on Friday September 1 that the Department of Infrastructure will formally approve the move at the next ordinary plenary session.
This pedestrian path, which connects Aguamarina with La Caleta, has remained closed since 2021, when a court ruling forced the City Council to block it off at each end to serve as a private access for the residents of the Bellavista residential area.
Around 20 years ago, a wall was erected to block pedestrians from walking the path directly in front of the Bellavista homes but the council demolished it back in 2015, much to the annoyance of the residents, who argued that their privacy had been severely compromised.
A lengthy battle commenced and in 2021 the court ruled in favour of the homeowners, specifying that if the local government wanted to make this path pubic, it would have to be done through expropriation from the Bellavista residents.
The land was indeed expropriated and in March this year, the Provincial Coastal Service agreed that the relevant works could be carried out to reopen the stretch as a public pedestrian promenade.
After its approval in the plenary session, the City Council wants to meet with the owners, in order to begin a joint appraisal process through which they intend to reach a common agreement on compensation for the expropriation.
