Body found in search for American cyclist missing in Andalucía
Matt Opperman, 50, disappeared from the Segura de la Sierra area of Jaén on January 25

The search for 50-year-old cyclist Matt Opperman, a native of the US but a long-time Andalucía resident, appears to have come to a tragic end with the discovery of a dead body next to a bike on Sunday February 16.
The body was discovered by a search party near the Peña del Olivar, in the municipality of Siles in Jaén, close to where Matt was last seen before disappearing on January 24. A keen mountain biker, the American had reportedly headed to the Segura mountain range for a cycle that morning but failed to return or check in with family.
Matt is well-known in Spain’s cycling community and works for Yeti Cycles. A member of the SpainDh club, he was in excellent physical health at the time of his disappearance and is fluent in Spanish, having lived between Málaga and Jaén for several years.
An official search of this specific area was launched on February 6 by the Guardia Civil and volunteers located the corpse lying next to a bicycle above the old Seminary of Siles.
The body will now undergo a post-mortem to determine if the deceased is indeed missing Matt Opperman.
