ARCHIVED - Benidorm to create new free public car park close to popular Levante beach
200 free parking spaces will be available next month in the Marina Baixa coastal resort, Alicante province
Residents and visitors to the Costa Blanca's most popular holiday resort will be able to take advantage of a new free car park after Benidorm Town Hall reached an agreement with a landowner to create 200 spaces close to Levante beach.
In addition to easing the headache of trying find a parking spot as tens of thousands descend on the coastal town, the council also plans to improve the general area surrounding the plot of land at the junction of calles Lérida, Murcia and Cuenta.
The new car park will be constructed on more than 4,800m2 of land and will be operational before the end of August as part of the local authority's 'On the Street' campaign which, amongst other things, aims to cut congestion.
Benidorm Mayor, Toni Pérez, visited the site on Wednesday July 28, along with other councillors, the vice-presidents of the Neighbourhood Council, Teresa Garrido and Manuel Sánchez Notario, and local residents.

"The Town Hall has reached an agreement with the landowner to use the land for the sole purpose of creating a public car park and will now begin to prepare and clean the plot for this very purpose," said Pérez.
To begin with, the public car park will be in force until October 30, 2024 although "it can be extended for as long as is deemed necessary if there is a willingness on both sides," said the mayor, who added that "this is a similar formula to that which was done years ago with the public car park on the site of Las Terrazas between Avenida Europa, Mediterráneo and Avenida de Madrid".
"With this project we are gaining parking spaces for residents and tourists at the same time as eliminating the current bad image of the plot, which has been abandoned and is overrun with weeds."
