ARCHIVED - Near drownings at beaches in Benidorm and Torrevieja
Two elderly men were hospitalised in Alicante province after being pulled semi or unconscious from the sea
In what is becoming an almost daily occurrence on the Costa Blanca, two elderly men almost drowned at popular beaches in Benidorm and Torrevieja.
Both bathers were treated for symptoms of drowning and were subsequently hospitalised following the near-death incidents on Wednesday July 27.
Emergency services received the first call for assistance at 1.30pm after a 78-year-old bather was pulled unconscious from the water at Acequión beach in Torrevieja.
Lifeguards performed basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the swimmer and managed to revive him. A SAMU medical team then took over and assisted the pensioner for symptoms of drowning before taking him to Torrevieja Hospital where he was admitted for further treatment.

A second alarm was raised by the lifeguard service at Levante beach in Benidorm just after 6.30pm requesting assistance for a semi-drowned 72-year-old man who was also rescued after getting into difficulty in the sea.
Once vital signs were revived on the shoreline, he was admitted to Marina Baixa hospital in Villajoyosa.
In an earlier tragedy, an 80-year-old man collapsed and died at Muchavista beach in El Campello on Monday July 25, one of the hottest days on record in Alicante province.
A 43-year-old man from the Faroe Islands suffered a heart attack and died whilst swimming in the sea at Elche's Arenales del Sol beach earlier this month, and a Spanish man, 73 drowned at Poniente beach in Benidorm.
