ARCHIVED - Benidorm steps up plans to restore iconic tower for public visits
Torre de Morales in the Marina Biaxa town, Alicante province, was declared an Asset of Cultural interest in 1996

Benidorm Town Hall has stepped up its plans to restore and open up the iconic 16th century Torre de Morals to the public, and is bidding for financial aid from Alicante Provincial Council to help fund the 200,000-euro-project.
The project was approved at a local level in June 2019, but has sat on the back burner until being included in the Municipal Budget 2022. Now, the Town Hall is applying for one of a number of provincial grants for the restoration of churches and monuments offering municipalities a maximum of 40,000 euros per project.
Morales defense tower is one of the most important heritage monuments in Benidorm and was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 1996. But it is currently closed and walled up, so the Town Hall wants to make it "visitable" to bring "this historical landmark closer to the public, especially the younger generations".
Located in the Avenida de Villajoyosa, on a strip of land that in the 16th century was next to the Camino Real, Torre de Morales is preserved up to a height of about seven metres.
Historically, it was also used as a dwelling, and there are three levels of floors inside which were once connected by a spiral staircase.
As part of the restoration, a new staircase will be constructed, the roof will be restored allowing access to the outside, wooden joinery will be replaced, and new electric lighting installed.
In addition, information panels will be erected inside and out so that visitors can learn more about the impressive tower.
