ARCHIVED - Benidorm police seize 1.2 million euros worth of cannabis plants and make 14 arrests
The arrests were made in Altea, Teulada, La Nucia and Gata in Alicante province
The National Police in Benidorm have shut down a large-scale drug production and trafficking operation and arrested 14 people in the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa areas of Alicante.
During the raids in Altea, Teulada, La Nucia and Gata, more than 4,200 cannabis plants were seized, which once processed, would have a street value of around 1.2 million euros. All of the detainees have already appeared before the Court of Instruction in Benidorm charged with drug trafficking, electricity fraud, identity theft, falsification of documents and belonging to a criminal group, and have been remanded in custody.
The investigation that culminated in the arrests lasted several months, during which time teams from Group I of UDYCO of Benidorm's Judicial Police Brigade of Benidorm carried out "intense surveillance" at several properties and warehouses.
According to police sources, the male detainees, including nine Albanians, two Russians, a Moldovan, an Italian and a Spaniard, "were part of a well-structured and hierarchical criminal group". Each member of the criminal gang had a specific task to carry out "in order not to arouse the suspicions of the police", although this proved not to be the case.
Once all the alleged suspects had been identified, more than 60 officers were involved in rounding them up, "due to the dangerous nature of the people under investigation".
In addition to the plants, six vehicles were also confiscated during a swoop in collaboration with Benidorm's Prevention and Reaction Unit, the Aerial Resources Service and the Canine Guides Unit of Alicante Provincial Police.
