ARCHIVED - Beachgoers in Javea will have to pay to park at coves this summer
Javea Town Council plans to charge for parking at the Granadella and Portitxol coves during peak season
As part of its coastal management plan, Javea Town Council will enforce parking fees at Portitxol (Carrer de la Barraca) and Granadella (Carrer del Pic Tort) coves this summer.
Access to both popular coves is via a single road, which becomes virtually impassable during peak season.
For years, the Town Council has been trying to reduce this annual saturation of vehicles, "which has a high detrimental impact in areas of great environmental wealth and affects public safety".
Given the lack of parking spaces, many motorists just dump their cars at the side of the road "completely diregarding the mandatory rules", making access difficult for emergency vehicles and meaning it woud be virtually "impossible to evacuate the coves" should the need arise .
Residents in Cala Grandella have been calling for a solution to the "illegal" activity for some time, and in December denounced the barrage of caravans pitching up overnight.
In 2017, the Town Hall began to regulate vehicle access to Granadella with the installation of a barrier that is lowered when the parking capacity at the cove is reached, a measure which was extended to Portitxol two years later.
But with the approval of the new Municipal Traffic Ordinance of Javea, the intention is to go a step further and apply the payment system with a time limit.
According to Javea's Councilor for the Environment and Beaches, Toni Miragall, the measure will only be active during the summer (the days the barrier is in operation) with single-day payment.
"The implementation of the parking fee aims to improve road safety in the coves, reduce the impact of visitors on the environment and overnight stays in the cove. But it also being introduced to meet the costs involved in regulating access," added Miragall.
Converting the cove car park into a pay parking area similar to a 'blue zone' also coincides with the renewal of the tenders for temporary beach services – the hire of sun loungers, parasols etc. – and the bidding companies have been made aware of the plans.
At the same time, the Town Hall is promoting an alternative public transport service to get to the two coves, "thereby guaranteeing sustainable access to these privileged environments".
Before the parking fee can be applied, the Town Council must make the plans available for public consultation to gather the opinions of any person or organisation affected.
