ARCHIVED - Work begins on new 1.6M euro Poniente beach walkway in Benidorm
The pedestrian walkway at the Costa Blanca resort's popular stretch of coastline will be completely replaced
Work has begun this week on a complete renovation of the pedestrian walkway at Benidorm's Poniente beach.
A budget of 1.6 million euros, financed exclusively by municipal coffers, has been set aside to replace rotten wooden surfaces with a view to completing the renovation in time for the summer season.
Benidorm mayor, Toni Pérez, said: "The current walkway, that runs parallel to the promenade, is in a very poor condition having supported heavy pedestrian traffic and its condition now causes an inconvenience to users."
He added that it doesn't give off the image that "Benidorm wants to portray".
The renovation will be carried out in two phases, covering an area of 5,400 m2 on the 1.5 km path, where, over time, the wooden surface has rotted and slats have warped making it difficult to use for mothers with prams and wheelchair users.
The first phase, which started on Wednesday, will involve pulling up the current walkway and recycling the wood at Benidorm's eco-park.
It will then be replaced with a sustainable, highly-resilient, synthetic wood-like material that will be installed in such a way that it can be removed when cleaning work needs to be carried out.
Poniente beach is one of five in Benidorm, and arguably one of the busiest. Last year, it lost its Blue Flag due to water quality problems, to the fury of municipal officials who last month took the risky decision to withdraw all of Benidorm's beaches from the Blue Flag accreditation process - a demanding and stringent practice that is synonymous with quality and safety around the world.
