ARCHIVED - WATCH: Dramatic footage of drone saving young woman swept out to sea in Alicante
"The drone saved my life" said the 19-year-old who got into serious difficulty off Santa Pola coast
The Valencia Government has released footage which demonstrates just how crucial new drone techonology is to saving lives in Alicante province.
The flying robot proved instrumental in the rescue of a 19-year-old woman who was swept out to sea in Santa Pola, Alicante, on Wednesday August 10.
In the clip, the eye in the sky scours the sea looking for potential emergencies and zones in on the woman who can be seen waving her arms in the air frantically almost 300 metres from the shore.
A lifejacket is dropped from the drone, which reaches the woman in just 40 seconds, but fails to self-inflate so a second is dropped. Fortunately, these incredible aircraft always carry a second lifejacket for emergencies of this kind or multiple rescues.
Thanks to the expertise of the General Drones pilot, the young woman grasped hold of the second jacket without any complications, and stayed afloat until a rescuer arrived around 60 seconds later.
After the hair-raising incident, the rescued woman approached the drone pilot to thank him for his life-saving efforts, and told him:"The drone saved my life, I was exhausted and because of the current, I couldn't get back to the shore."
Twenty municipalities in the Valencia Region now have a drone prevention and rescue service contracted by the Generalitat, and the unmanned aircraft have quickly become an extremely useful tool for the rapid detection of people in danger at sea.
So far this summer, the Valencian Security and Emergency Response Agency drones have assisted in 87 emergencies across the region, completing 637 flights over a total of 1,611 km of coastline.
